Brief History

In 1927 the "3 area system" was introduced in Blackpool District with the 23rd being part of the Southern Division. At this time Packs, Troops and Rover Crews had all registered as separate units.

In 1928 it was decided to encourage more co-operation between the 3 age groups and bring about more parental support and that the SCOUT GROUP should become the way forward. Thus all groups were re-registered and the Scout Group came into being.

1928

In December 1928 the 23rd is shown as meeting at St Mary's schoolroom.

1929

The census figures show the group to have the highest membership in the District- 37 wolf cubs, 42 scouts, 11 rover scouts, & 5 leadersGSM Mr JW Dixon. Just when the group came into being is unknown - it is assumed is was sometime in 1928

1930

The group played an active part in the County Rally at Squires Gate

1931

The registration number was 9445. The neckerchief was RED.The Leaders were GSM JW Dixon, CM Miss M Rostern, ACM T Fox, SM C Battye

1933

Leaders now GSM JW Dixon,CM T Fox, ACM G Cleghorn, SM C Battye, ASM W Whitehead, RSL T Hopcutt. It is interesting to note, that as many other Rover Crews during this period, they list the crew as meeting every night

1934

As of 12th February 1934 the group is registered as an OPEN group, with registration number 16017.The neckerchief was BLUE with WHITE border. The group was now meeting on Boome Street. Leaders now GSM JW Dixon, ASM G Cleghorn & R Stewart, SM C Battye, CM & RSL T Hopcutt. There were 18 wolf cubs and 14 Scouts

1937

Still meeting in Boome Street

1948

29th January 1948 the Group registration changes once again, although still an OPEN group they are now back at St mary's church, meeting in the Church hall. Mr Roy Ashworth in SM. The registration number is 25867

1954

27th April 1954 another change in registration when the group becomes SPONSORED meeting at St Mary's church with Mr F Harris as GSM, the neckerchief also changed at this time to the familiar WHITE with BLUE border. One feature in these early days was that the group had a drum band. At periods around the times of the changes listed above it is understood that the group might have been in abeyance but it's registration had never been cancelled which makes it one of the oldest groups in the District.

1955 - 1972

It is difficult to list the changes in leadership at the 23rd over the years.

1973

Start of the Venture Scout Unit - ceased in 1996

1986

Start of the Beaver Scout Colony
