Brief History
There was a group at meeting place as early as 1942 (if not before)
but this was registered as the 7th Blackpool. In 1933 this Group
left and became an open group.
The present Group, started in 1939 and despite War starting in the
following September continued to thrive and as remained a strong
Group ever since.
This Group was registered on 3rd February 1939 a sponsored group.
Registration Number 20012
Despite the uncertain times the Group rapidly grew strong and active
with a Wolf Cub Pack, Troop, and Rover crew.
It's first leaders were The Rev. E. Robinson and Mr R Holland
In 1941 with the departure of the Rev Robinson Harry Wilson became
acting Scoutmaster
In the 1948 handbook, Ron Holland is shown as the Group Scoutmaster
and at this period there was such leaders as Harry Wilson, Les Illingworth
(Senior Scouts) with Stan Meek and Enid Thorpe (Later Mrs F Wilson)
with the pack
With it's past tradition of strong support of Senior Scouts it was
no surprise that the 37th was one of the first Groups to be allowed
to form their own Venture Scout unit in 1973 (following the introduction
of Venture Scouts in 1967 only the independent District Venture
Units were allowed to function)
In 1983 the Group started the first Beaver Colony in the District
Two points of interest
1. Ron Holland was not only one of the founder leaders but was a
member of the original 7th Blackpool
2. The Troop flag of the original 7th Blackpool is still to be seen
at the Church with a 3 added to the flag for the troop to use
Scouting at the 37th
The first records of scouting at their church was in 1924 when a
Mrs B Pearson was shown as running a Pack and Troop there, registered
as the 7th Blackpool
1926 - 27
Miss Pearson was now assisted by Mr M Moyer A.S.M. and Mr W.Dyson
A.C.M.
1928
At the National Registration at the introduction of the Group System.
The 7th Blackpool was registered as Number 7284 with 6 cubs and
16 scouts. Around the end of 1930 it is thought that the Group may
have been closed, for it did not appear in the 1931 handbook
February 1931
Mr Jack Kemp resigned from the 3rd Blackpool to take charge of the
7th Blackpool at the church. The first cubs and Scouts being enrolled
on June 23rd were members of the 3rd Blackpool was present
1933
Following a dispute with the Church the Group re-registered as an
Open Group Registration Number 14558 meeting at the rear of Ashburton
Road, Blackpool.
But when did they return? 2nd installment due soon
